iXedit® FAQ

Thank you for your interest in our online editor based on Adobe InDesign Server. A list of frequently asked questions can be found below. Please select the desired category.

Does the editor work in what-you-see-is-what-you-get mode (WYSIWYG)?
Yes, the view is generated live from the Adobe InDesign Server. This means that the presentation is always accurate.

Is the InDesign file converted?
No. The system works without formatting issues and it can therefore guarantee the reliability of the documents.

Is it possible to track document changes?
Yes, via the additional module Version. This logs and saves all of the frame changes that have been made. Incidentally, this applies not only to the editor, but also operations with the offline editor or InDesign desktop. The versioned content can be evaluated and also compared later. A document’s development can be tracked that seamlessly.

Can I install iXedit in my own application?
Yes. Appropriate interfaces are provided for this. We recommend a technical discussion with our system specialists.

What technology does iXedit use?
iXedit is available in HTML and Java versions. Both of these are based on our iXentric technology and they can also be operated in mixed mode. The HTML version is essentially restricted to web browser environments, whereas the Java versions are used in our native clients.

Is it possible to run iXedit on a separate server?
Yes. You can install iXedit with the underlying iXentric Server Manager on a server of your choice.

Which InDesign versions are supported?
iXedit, or the underlying iXentric technology, supports both CS6 and all CC versions. Because of the high demand for CS6 support, we will try to maintain it for as long as possible.

Is it possible to get an “individual” demo?
Of course. Contact us and we will be happy to set an appointment.

Can I set a restriction on which elements are editable?
Yes. You can define how a given frame can be handled at the frame level. This is done with the InDesign extension, iXcontrol.

How does iXcontrol work?
iXcontrol is an extension for Adobe InDesign Desktop. It is installed via the extension manager or directly from the Adobe add-on store. The extension enables you to assign unique names to the frames and it lets you define the rules you want. This can be done in a single operation when creating the layout.
These rules are stored “in” the InDesign file and also move with it. Our editor components, iXedit and iXcopy, then import these rules and respond accordingly.

How are the corporate design standards for the document ensured?
You can also use the frame rules to define the corporate design. You can define which elements are editable, which are not, and what the user is allowed to do within a given frame.

Which elements can be tagged with iXcontrol?
As a basic principle, we distinguish between text, image and table frames. The latter can also be “broken down” into cells. There are various rules with different settings for each element.

Can text formats be restricted?
Yes. You can restrict the selection of text formats so that users cannot select one arbitrarily.

How do I prevent image resolution from being too poor?
You have the possibility of entering a minimum DPI value in tagging. This value is used in the online editor and a warning is sounded if it is not met.

Are there rules for dynamic frame behaviour?
Yes. For example, frames can automatically extend in height as more text is entered. In addition, other frames can then change their position, for example, by shifting accordingly.

How are rules for image frames set?
You can specify the InDesign-typical customisation rules for image frames. When images are inserted or replaced, the image is automatically adjusted according to the rules.

Can several frames be defined in a single work process?
Yes. In this case, a consecutive number would be added to the assigned name for the frame, since the names of the frames must be unique. You can also differentiate between texts and images as well as visibility.

Are there functions to adjust page sizes?
Yes. For example, elements can affect the height of the page, such as when a display has different amounts of bullet points.

Are right-to-left texts supported?
Yes. For example, Hebrew or Arabic. You can configure the frame accordingly. Please note that you need a special version of InDesign (ME edition) to be able to define paragraph formats that run from right to left.

Is there a cost for iXcontrol?
No.

Which languages is iXcontrol available in?
German and English.

What text editing options are there?
The text itself can be edited, of course. The user can access the available paragraph and character formats. In addition, special characters (via the on-screen keyboard where necessary) and control characters can be entered. The latter are generally displayed with the characters as in InDesign itself. Functions such as soft returns or tabulators are also available.

Is it possible to edit linked text frames?
Yes, via what is called “story mode”. In this case, the text from the entire linked chain appears in the text editor.

Can tables be edited as well?
Yes, even in various ways. For starters, the entire table can be opened in a table editor, or you can edit individual cells instead. It depends on how the document was tagged, see also iXcontrol.

Can I make indents and numbered lists?
Yes, via formats defined in InDesign. You have complete control.

Are the typical keys used for bold, italic, and underlined text?
Yes, you can have it. Since we want to have “clean documents” (just like you do), these keys do not simply trigger bold, italic, etc., but rather a character format. This gives you complete control over what should happen typographically.

Can special characters be displayed in the editor?
Yes, just like you are familiar with in Word.

Can a PDF be generated from the document I am working with?
Yes, at any time.

Is it possible to create new elements?
Yes. You can create text or image frames and also, for example, QR codes with various characteristics.

Are geometric changes also possible?
Yes, of course, depending on the tagging: move, scale or rotate.

Are there any aids for positioning frames precisely?
Automatic positioning aids help in the exact alignment of elements. For this purpose, help lines are automatically displayed, which orient themselves to the positions of the other elements and automatically snap to them.

Is a spell checker integrated?
Yes. Various languages are available. In addition, you can create your own dictionaries, depending on the client, and add the words you want to them.

Is there a function for arranging frames?
Yes. Frames can be brought to the front or rear.

Is it possible to zoom in and out in preview mode?
Yes, and you can also fit it to the page size. In addition, the user can choose the quality of the preview. If you have a slow connection, for example, less data will be transferred – and the view will obviously be of poorer quality.

Is it possible to generate QR codes?
Yes. Various types such as text, WLAN, vCard, etc. are available for this purpose. You will be asked for the necessary parameters in a corresponding menu.

Can users also write comments?
The additional “Annotation” module is required for this. This is installed transparently in the editor.

Is it possible to swap images out?
Of course. The selection of the available images is predefined via a corresponding search query.

Can other elements be incorporated into documents?
In principle, all element types that are supported by InDesign can be installed. This could be InDesign files or snippets, as well as PDF or other file formats like Word or Excel.

Can I see the master text during a translation directly in the editor?
Yes, but in order to do so you will need the additional module “Variation”. This allows the systematic control of (language) variants. If you are working on the text of a variant, the text editor appears in split-screen mode. You will see the master text on the left-hand side and your editable variant text on the right.

Is user training required in order to use iXedit?
A “training” is certainly overkill. However, we find it useful to give users some brief instruction. This can be done in person, remotely or as a handout or on-screen video.

How is iXedit licensed?
Within our marketing management platform, publiXone, the function is only licensed per client. This can then be made available to users and configured as they wish. They do not require any further licence or the like.
You can also have iXedit licensed as a standalone version and run it on your own server. This generally involves an integration project. Please do not hesitate to contact us.
